Songs and Praise

The history of the Apostolic Faith Mission, United Kingdom will not be complete without a mention of Rev. Victor Okusanya who pioneered the establishment of the ministry on these isles. Reverend Okusanya turned 80 on 16th March 2011.

A special birthday reception was organised by the church to honour Rev. Okusanya on Saturday 19th March 2011 at the Bexley branch premises of the church. Members of church and family as well as other well wishers thronged the occasion to celebrate with the octogenarian.

The event opened with a brief prayer by Bro Paul Davis after which guests listened to a brief account of Rev Victor’s life given by the Master of Ceremony Bro Ladeinde. Various contributions came from some of the guests, drawn from a cross section of those present, all acknowledging the impact Rev Victor has played in each person’s life. Without exception they all had very good things to say about this man of God who had spent a lifetime in the service of God and fellow human beings.

Some students of Salem Academy of Music, a music school founded by Rev. Victor after retiring from the ministry performed at the occasion. The pieces, mostly instrumental, were enjoyable and paid tribute to the ability of Rev. Victor to recognise and nurture musical talent.

Sister Thoko on behalf of the church presented a gift to Rev. Okusanya as a token of appreciation of his dedication, and for his service to the body of Christ.

In his response to the speeches Rev Victor Okusanya thanked the event organisers and the guests for coming to celebrate with him. He offered some words of encouragement to everyone present, saying that there was nothing he could have achieved on his own, giving glory to God for giving him the opportunity to serve. He started by inviting everyone to join him in a chorus of “Oh Lord, Glory to your name” three times. He confirmed God’s goodness in his life, even through the dark periods. He said that although he is 80 years old, he still felt like a 25 year old physically.

He admonished everyone present to pray fervently, asking God to be found useable for his pleasure. He also enjoined everyone to seek God first in everything knowing that all other things will be added unto us as it is written in the bible. He encouraged us to change our attitude and give our utmost to God. He pointed to Rev. Isaac Adigun, the current pastor as an example of what God can do with a life fully yielded to Him.

He concluded by thanking God for restoration of his sight, which was almost gone; but now he can see clearly un-aided.

The occasion was rounded up after cutting of the celebration cake, and a sumptuous birthday meal followed by a closing prayer from Bro Osayemi.
