Bible Study – Josiah’s Radical Reform and Wholehearted Devotion to God

Key Verse

“And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.”
— (2 Kings 23:3)

Josiah’s Radical Reform and Wholehearted Devotion to God

2 Kings 23

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

This chapter continues the account of the righteous reign of King Josiah, following the discovery of the book of the Law and the prophecy of the Prophetess Huldah that God’s wrath had been stirred against Judah. In response, Josiah undertook the difficult task of removing idol worship and restoring true devotion to God.

Verses 1–3 describe how Josiah gathered the people and had the book of the Law read aloud. He stood at a recognized place of authority, likely used for royal declarations, and led the people in renewing their covenant with God. By “standing to the covenant,” they publicly committed themselves to obeying the Law.

Verses 4–20 detail Josiah’s sweeping religious reforms. He commanded the priests to cleanse the Temple of all objects associated with idol worship, removed priests who served pagan gods like Baal, and destroyed the “grove” set up by Manasseh, including the image of Asherah. He also tore down the high places where idols were worshipped. By defiling Topheth, he destroyed the site associated with Molech worship and made it permanently unclean and detestable to the people.

In verses 21–23, Josiah reinstated the Passover, the most important of Israel’s feasts. This act not only demonstrated obedience to the rediscovered Law but also reminded the people of God’s deliverance from Egypt and their identity as His chosen nation.

The remainder of the chapter describes Josiah’s continued reforms and his untimely death in the midst of complex political events. Although his leadership sparked a period of religious renewal, it did not endure after his death. The judgment pronounced on Judah still stood, and Josiah’s death signaled the beginning of the kingdom’s decline.

A TESTIMONY FROM OUR DAY

As I refl ect on our focus verse, I am especially grateful for those who have made a covenant “to walk after the Lord.” Like many others, I have been shaped by someone in my family who made that commitment long before I was born.

When my grandmother was a young woman, she was saved in a revival meeting in her small rural community. From that moment, she set her heart to follow God. She often testifi ed, “When God saved me, He took the longing for the things of the world out of my heart. I did not know the way, but when I was honest before Him, He changed me completely.”
As she grew in her faith, she longed for a deeper walk with God and began searching for a church that taught the whole Word of God. She attended nearly every revival service that came through her area. Each time, she would take the doctrines she heard, go home, kneel beside her bed, open her Bible, and ask God to show her the truth. God was faithful, and time after time she sensed Him urging her to keep looking.

Eventually she heard about the Apostolic Faith Church. When she compared their teachings with Scripture, she knew she had found what she had been praying for. She committed herself to that fellowship, and because of her decision, my mother was raised in the Gospel and later gave her own life to the Lord. She married my father, who was also a Christian, and I had the privilege of growing up in a godly home. Now my wife and I are doing our best to pass that same heritage on to our sons. The covenant my grandmother made with God has blessed our family for generations.

n today’s passage, King Josiah led the people of Judah in renewing their covenant with God. When the book of the Law was read, the people “stood to the covenant,” publicly declaring their desire to obey God’s Word.

Have you made a covenant to walk after the Lord and keep His commandments? When we choose to follow Him wholeheartedly, our obedience becomes a testimony that encourages others to do the same.

A CLOSER LOOK

Question 1
What did Josiah do after hearing the response of the prophetess? (2 Kings 23:1-8) Josiah took steps to remove all idols from the nation. What idols could be in a person’s life in our day? How should you respond when God’s Word convicts you?
Question 2
What do you think prompted such a young king to lead a spiritual turnaround in a nation that had been drifting for decades (2 Kings 22:11–13; 2 Chronicles 34:3)?
Question 3
Josiah is described as turning to God with all his heart, soul, and might. (II Kings 23:25). Why is it sometimes difficult to fully let go of sinful habits or influences? What does “wholehearted devotion” to God look like in practical terms?
Question 4
Josiah’s actions impacted the entire nation. How can one person’s faith infl uence a family or peer group or community? (II Kings 23: 2, 4, 11, 21-22) In what ways can leaders (and potential leaders) today follow Josiah’s example? (II Kings 23: 3, 5, 19, 25)
Question 5
Despite Josiah’s faithfulness, God’s judgment on Judah was still coming. (II Kings 23:26-27) Why do you think God’s judgment still came despite Josiah’s reforms? What’s the difference between outward religious activity and true heart transformation?
Question 6
In what ways has someone who made a commitment to follow God influenced your own walk with Him (Hebrews 13:7; 2 Timothy 1:5)?

TAKE HOME

When we take a resolute stand for God and make a commitment to follow Him, others will be encouraged to make the same commitment. God is waiting to help us make right choices and avoid the consequences of sin. Are we availing ourselves of His help?
