AFM Young@Heart 65+ Report
The Young at Heart programme, presented by the Welfare Team of AFM South England Region, was a vibrant and heart-warming day of fellowship, faith, and celebration for members aged 65 and above. The event, themed “Rooted in Christ: Where Faith and Friendship Blossom,” beautifully captured the essence of growing together in faith and love through every season of life.
The programme began at 11:00 a.m. with registration and refreshments, followed by joyful choruses that filled the room with gratitude and praise, with 30 Young@Heart members in attendance (24 – physically and 6 – virtually) plus 17 volunteers.
Brother Fungai Mangere led the opening prayer, inviting God’s presence into the gathering. The day’s host, Sister Temitoyosi Nwaebonyi, guided the programme with warmth and grace. Participants were welcomed by Sister Shareen Ojo, who introduced the lineup of activities, and a lively icebreaker led by Sister Tope Ajibola got everyone engaged and smiling.
The first special activity was an inspiring poem by Brother Wale Sobowale, followed by heartfelt testimonies where attendees shared stories of faith, perseverance, and God’s faithfulness. In her Word of Wisdom, Sister Arit Nduoyo encouraged everyone to embrace aging gracefully and to leave a lasting legacy of walking with God. Drawing lessons from Naomi, she reminded participants that faithfulness and consistency in following Christ can influence generations to come.
The engaging panel session, featuring Brother Femi and Sister Kofo Ladiende, Sister Chioma Okere, and Sister Florence Osayemi, provided honest and insightful discussions. Panellists answered thoughtful questions such as “How has your friendship evolved through the years as sisters and couples?” and “What are some practical ways to show love?” Their responses highlighted the beauty of companionship, forgiveness, and intentional kindness in relationships.
After lunch and photo sessions, Sister Teju Ogunkoya led another fun icebreaker, followed by a touching duet by Brother Samuel and Sister Funke Oretuga, who ministered with “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “He’s the Lily of the Valley.” The afternoon continued with inspiring testimonies and a special gift presentation to celebrate attendees. Sister Lydia Olusakin led a heartfelt time of corporate prayer, lifting everyone before God in gratitude and unity.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Brother Mark Mfandarahwa (District Superintendent), who expressed appreciation to all participants, organizers, and volunteers, encouraging everyone to continue to love and care for one another as a reflection of Christ’s love. Brother Anthony Owolabi offered the closing prayer, rounding off a beautiful day that left everyone strengthened, joyful, and truly rooted in Christ, where faith and friendship continue to blossom.
