Know Him Better
Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. – James 4:8
Lately, our grandson Kevin has wanted to spend more time with his grandpa so that he can get to know him better. Although
my husband and I live three and a half hours away from our son and his family, we see them at least once a month. The grandchildren also spend several
days with us when they have time off from school, but Kevin feels he needs much more time with his grandpa. When we are together, Kevin stays close
by Grandpa’s side. They play two of Kevin’s favorite games—Fish and Checkers. Lately, ping-pong has been added to their fun times.
Kevin not only wants to know his grandpa better, he wants to be just like him. Grandpa wears a suit and tie to church, so Kevin wears a suit and tie to
church. Grandpa carries his Bible to church, so Kevin carries his “Holy Bible” to church. Grandpa preaches from the pulpit, so Kevin would like to
“give his testimony” from the pulpit.
His grandpa enjoys spending time with Kevin because he loves Kevin. Grandpa counts it a privilege to talk to his little grandson about the Lord, take him
to Sunday school and church, read the Bible to him, and pray with him. The more time they spend together, the closer they become, and they take every
opportunity to be together.
As Christians, do we take every opportunity to spend time with God? Our time with Him is important because it draws us closer to Him, helps us to know
Him better, and causes us to be more like Him. How can we spend time with the Lord? By going to His house, daily reading His Word, and communing with
Him in prayer. God is pleased with us when we make the effort to do these things, because He loves us more than we can possibly imagine. As we draw
near to Him, He will draw near to us.
