Searching For Treasure

Jun 12, 2023

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13

Ever since I was a small child, I have loved to look for colored stones and shells along the Oregon Coast. My favorite finds are orange or white agates. These rocks are formed by volcanic activity and are eventually tossed up from the ocean’s floor onto the sandy Oregon beaches. A few years back, during a vacation to the Oregon Coast, my family found a wonderful place to search for sea treasures called Bayocean. However, to get to this beach one has to climb a narrow, sandy, overgrown trail. Before you reach the shoreline, a steep hill also must be scaled, and then descended. Once on the Bayocean beach, most people see the lovely view of the water lapping gently around them. Not a lot of shells or pretty stones stand out. However, if you walk to the rock beds and kneel down on the moist sandy ground as I did that day, a whole new world of beauty opens up. As I looked closely at the ground, thousands of small rocks in various shapes and colors sparkled back at me. I trained my eyes to look for white or deep orange colors among the wet gray pebbles. Soon my eyes rested on a lovely almost pure white agate—a wonderful find. I continued to find treasure after treasure tucked between the simple gray stones that day.

As we walk through this life, there may be times when we feel there are very few “treasures” in our pathway. The blessings seem few and far between, and perhaps some crashing waves of adversity have caused us to feel tossed about. Like my agates, spiritual treasures cannot be seen from a distance, and we will not suddenly stumble upon them by chance. Rather, we must get on our knees and search for them. Spiritual treasures are promised to us, but they will only be found through time in prayer.

Although I still love searching for treasures on the beach, my greatest joy comes from the heavenly treasures that are found when I seek the Lord. God’s shoreline is filled with blessings and treasures just waiting to be discovered, but we must kneel before Him and seek Him with all our hearts.
