A Unique Gift

Aug 18, 2021

Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. – 2 Corinthians 9:15

Finding gifts for people can be challenging. It seems to be easier to shop for certain individuals rather than others,
but often I still end up struggling to find something for those I know the best. My goal is to find something unique, useful, and personal, but I regularly
have to settle for something less.

Recently my oldest son gave me a unique gift—a stainless steel pencil, which extends like a telescope, with a magnet on the tip of the extension.
The thought was that as I get older and drop my keys, or if I need a longer arm, this device would save me the trouble of having to be inconvenienced.
At this time, it is only a conversation piece; ultimately I suppose it may be useful. It was personal in that it made me laugh, but it is not exactly
a gift I had been hoping for!

When Paul the Apostle thanked God for His “unspeakable gift,” He was speaking of Jesus Christ. God wants Jesus to be more than a conversation piece; Jesus
entered into this world to be everything we need. God’s Gift is unique, because there is only one Mediator between God and man. It is useful to everyone
because it provides salvation from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and ultimately from the very presence of sin. It is personal because it gives
us a Friend who understands us, a Friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

God’s Unspeakable Gift is also timeless, because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. It is costly above all other gifts, because we
are redeemed by the precious Blood of Jesus, not with corruptible things such as silver and gold. While many gifts are lost, depreciate, lose their
usefulness, or wear out, none of these will occur with the Gift of Gifts; Jesus has let us know that He will never leave us or forsake us.

The list can go on and on as we compare God’s Gift to us with the temporal gifts that we receive here on earth. This Gift is by far the best one a person
could ever receive, and it is available for everyone. As we think about the different gifts we can give to our loved ones, let us not forget to share
with them the most precious Gift of all!
