Landmarks
And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? – Genesis 3:9
In my job, I take calls from people who need emergency road service. While it is never fun to have car trouble, it is
particularly bad in the middle of the night, which is the shift that I work. Many times these people have no idea where they are when they call. They
usually do know the road, highway, or freeway they are on, but that may be the extent of it. They do not remember the last sign they passed, a mile
post, or anything that will help us to locate them.
When that happens, we have to start asking more pointed questions. “From where you are, what can you see? A service station, a large building, a neon sign?
Do you remember passing a certain mountain?” We are looking for a landmark, something that will get us into their general vicinity, at least. Once
we discover their vicinity, we can call a local tow company and let them ask more specific questions. Eventually, we find the people by using these
landmarks.
As Christians, we have spiritual landmarks, and these are very helpful when the trials of life come along and threaten to overwhelm us. We can reference
those landmarks to locate ourselves and know where we stand when we need help from the Lord. For example, if we have passed the landmark of salvation,
then we know that we are His child and He will direct our steps. If God has given us a particular calling, that call is a landmark which we can look
to and know that He will also help us to do it. The experience of His healing touch is a landmark that we can reference in later times of health concerns
to remind ourselves that our lives are in His hands.
If you are facing a trial today and you are not sure what to do next, ask the Lord to help locate yourself. Unlike emergency road service, God always knows
precisely where we are—the landmarks in our lives are necessary for our own use, but He will help us to remember them.
