A Plain Path

Aug 19, 2021

Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. – Psalm 27:11

As we traveled an unfamiliar road, I watched a traffic helicopter circle overhead and proceed behind us down the freeway
as we approached a busy intersection. When we tuned to the radio station that was broadcasting the traffic report, the announcer told of a detour several
miles up the highway because of a jackknifed truck with a spilled load on the freeway. We appreciated the warning and took out our map to find an alternate
route to the next city.

Laying aside the map, I thought about the pilot of that helicopter. He could move about without hindrance over the city, up or down the highway, and he
could see the congestion and hover over the site to report the problem on the road. He could see for miles!

God is like that. He is able to see everything at once! He knows what is ahead of us and He warns us when to stop, when to turn around, when to speak,
and when to remain silent. He knows the end from the beginning because He is God. Are we listening?

As God guided the Children of Israel with the cloud and the pillar of fire, He will guide us with His Spirit if we listen to His still, small voice. God’s
map is His Word. It was not given to foil or confuse us or make life difficult, but to direct us. He wants the best for us. He wants us to be happy,
content, useful, and ready for Heaven. God will lead us in a plain path. It is up to us to follow His “traffic report.”

The Lord sees ahead. Listen for His warnings and detours, and obey the signs. If we ignore Him, much of our decision making will be left to chance, but
if we follow God, He will not lead us wrong. He is “hovering over us.” Tune in and listen to His voice!
