A Beautiful Assortment

Nov 04, 2020

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. – Genesis 2:7

Recently, I was looking at the collection of shoes my grandson has lined up on his bedroom shelf. I counted about fifteen
pairs. There are regular tennis shoes, some with thick soles for playing basketball, some with high tops, others low; three pairs of dressier shoes
for church; a pair of summer sandals; and a pair of rubber flip-flops for just running out to the mailbox or next door to Mother’s house. Sitting in
the garage, too mud-caked to be brought in, is a pair of work boots, some rather worn out tennis shoes for “just hanging out,” and one pair of waders
for duck hunting.

My grandson likes to have a variety of shoes. Each pair is used for a different purpose. After all, tennis shoes would not be too practical for hunting
ducks in the slough!

Variety is a good thing when it comes to people, too. My husband and I raised seven children in our home, and every one was unique. There were certainly
some similarities among them, but also a diversity of talents, interests, and personality traits. No two were exactly alike, and we were glad for that.
Some in our family are great cooks, some have a knack for mathematics, and some are good story tellers. As individuals we each only have a little to
offer, but all together we can do a lot.

Can you imagine how life would be if everyone liked the same foods, wore the same clothes, had the same hobbies, and thought the same thoughts? Perhaps
we would all be like me; I could have everything my way, and we would all like it! But we would also be greatly limited in what we could accomplish.
We would all have the same weaknesses, and there would be no one to help us out. Fortunately, God loves variety. God made us all different for a reason.
When He created each of us, He had a special purpose in mind. Every living soul can serve Him in a personal way with the talents and abilities that
He has given.

God has a person in mind to accomplish every part of His will on this earth. How thrilled He must be when one of those precious souls fulfills the purpose
for which he was created!
