Looking for Peace
Peace, be still. – Mark 4:39
If there is anything the world is looking for today, it is peace. We need peace at home, at work, in the church, in our
countries, and in the world at large. More than ever before, efforts are being directed to making and sustaining peace. Different organizations, such
as the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN), are set up primarily to ensure peace. Yet, it almost seems as if the more people there are
working to have peace, the more elusive it becomes. Why? Because they are leaving the Prince of Peace out of their plans.
Despite the problems that come along in both our personal lives and the world in general, it is good to know that true peace is very near. In Mark 4:39
we read of an event that brought a desired peace: “And he [Jesus] arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind
ceased, and there was a great calm.” What a miracle! In the midst of a violent storm, in which it became increasingly evident that lives could perish,
Jesus’ disciples cried out to Him for help and He brought a wonderful peace.
Many people are afraid because of all the troubles happening around the world, but just as Jesus commanded peace on that day, He can command peace into
our lives today. The surrounding troubles do not have to affect us in a fearful way because we know that God is in control. Even the wind and waves
obey Him! What problem could arise that He could not handle? As long as we are in His care, we have nothing to fear.
Peace is what we all want, isn’t it? When the Prince of Peace reigns in our hearts, we will have a deep, settled peace that nothing can shake. May He give
each of us a personal peace in this troubled world.
