As a Child

Aug 30, 2020

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. – 1 Peter 2:2

I received a call from my daughter, and as soon as she could quit laughing, she told me what had just occurred. She had picked up her son from school
and was on the way to pick up her daughter. As is her habit, she began to talk with him about his day. He had little to say and was silent for
a few minutes, which is a rarity with him, but then he wanted to talk about Sunday school.

He mentioned that he had learned that Jesus loved all little kids. My daughter agreed with him. He then stated that he was sure that Jesus liked it
when adults were kind and showed love to kids. My daughter said that again she agreed. He then paused and said how it was important that adults
show their love for little kids. Once again she agreed. He then asked her a question: “Do you know how you can show little kids that you love them?”
She slowly inquired how it could be done. “You buy them things!” he exclaimed.

Though he had the main thought right, he was applying it to meet his own desires. Still, we can be encouraged that God’s Word is getting across in
our Sunday schools. Jesus did seem to have a special place for children. He enjoyed having them around and one time he even used a young boy’s
lunch to feed five thousand people (John 6). He let us know that they have their own angels (Matthew 18:10). He implores us to become as little
children, and “as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

My grandchildren are learning God’s Word, and I care enough for them to make sure that they learn it correctly. Often adults (as well as children)
try to bend the Scriptures around in our minds to fit our own desires. But if we are as children in our desire to learn, God’s Spirit will lead
us to truth and spiritual growth as we explore His Word.
